Crowns and Bridges
When a patient has a situation that needs conventional treatment of
natural teeth and the teeth are structurally healthy, crowns or bridges
are a very sensible restoration. Natural teeth are really natures implants
and what better support than your natural teeth.
Single crowns are restorations that cover a tooth that is either
broken down or non-esthetic for one reason or another. The crown usually
covers all of the surfaces of the tooth and is looked at as the strongest
way to restore a tooth.
There have been many advances in the manufacturing of crowns with material
that are all ceramic and remarkably strong. These materials are very
lifelike and are often times milled from a solid source of porcelain
with a computer milling machine.
Dental Technicians are a key part of the making of an all ceramic or
metal ceramic crown. There are areas of the mouth that are not a wise
choice in using all ceramic products and Dr. Sheridan will discuss these
areas with you.
Bridges will replace a missing tooth by using a tooth in front
and in back of the missing tooth for support. The teeth used for support
must be healthy in order to get many years of service for the new bridge.
Dr. Sheridan and the patient weigh out the "pros and cons"
of a natural tooth supported bridge and compare it to a dental implant.
There are times that it makes more sense to go with a natural tooth
bridge than a dental implant.
Porcelain Veneers can be a nice option when a tooth or group
of teeth need more cosmetic changes rather than large functional changes.
A veneer is placed on the front of the tooth and usually does not remove
much tooth and remains very conservative. The porcelain or composite
facing is very thin and bonds to the enamel and sometimes dentin portion
of the tooth.
Very remarkable changes can be complete with this treatment and is looked
at as 'Cosmetic Dentistry'.
